In the morning, we will land on Itygran Island. Here lies the Whale Alley — an ancient Eskimo sanctuary made from the bones and skulls of bowhead whales, resembling a modern conceptual art installation. Created no later than the 16th century, it was discovered only about fifty years ago. Afterwards, aboard the Akademik Shokalskiy, we will proceed to Gilmimyl Bay, which is part of the Beringia National Park.
A short trek will reward us with a visit to thermal springs. After relaxing there, we return to the ship and sail to another bay belonging to the Beringia National Park — Penkigney. This is a favorite spot for gray and bowhead whales, which we plan to approach in Zodiac inflatable boats.
The last journey for today is to the village of Yanrakynnot, near which lies the Whale Cemetery — a somber and controversial "monument" to the era of commercial whaling. The sight of hundreds of huge bones, sometimes as tall as a human, from these majestic sea creatures is both chilling and mesmerizing.
