"Professor Khromov" will anchor off the coast of Chirpoi Island, whose name translates from the Ainu language as "Small Birds." It is the largest of the "Black Brothers," a subgroup of the central part of the Greater Kuril Chain. The island contains two volcanoes — Chyorny Volcano, rising 624 meters, and Snow Volcano, 395 meters high.
The fastest and most confident guests may attempt a climb to Chyorny Volcano to enjoy stunning views of the neighboring islands, the lava tongue, and the fumarole vents inside the crater. The ascent is very challenging: 9 kilometers across lava fields and volcanic scree with a constant elevation gain of up to 600 meters above sea level. The island is also home to Steller sea lion haulouts and vibrant seabird colonies, which we will approach by Zodiac.
For those not ready for such a demanding adventure, there is the option to try your luck searching for glass fishing floats — kukhtyli — that often wash up on the sandy Kuril shores from Japan. These glass balls were traditionally used as floats for fishing nets, attached to the upper line to keep the net properly positioned in the water and to control its depth. Today they have been replaced by plastic floats and are no longer used, but collectors around the world are willing to pay a high price to add them to their collections.
